best thing to do with finances is to write down all the things you spend money on, on a daily basis. and then separate them into categories - food, transportation, clothing, entertainment, etc...
then you'll see exactly where your money goes. i did this for esther and found that she was spending so much on magazines - she cut back and was saving $100 a month cause of that one thing.
